What I learned this week: Um...nothing, really.
What I want to learn in the future: How to not procrastinate. I'm not great at it.
Something that frustrated me: This week was horrible. Absolutely horrible.
Something that made me happy: Five more days of school and I'm d-o-n-e.

Viral Videos
Three things I did not know:
1. The amount of video uploaded to YouTube per minute is up to 72 hours. That's crazy.
2. You can basically pay money to create a viral video.
3. A view is counted only after a certain part of the clip is played.
Two opinions:
1. Bless the viral video, which gave us hits like Gangnam Style.
2. Paying for your video to go viral seems...scummy.
One question:
1. How many more days before Gangnam Syle hits 1000000000 views? Crazy.

Gollum
Three things I did not know:
1. Serkis began acting as Gollum as an assistance to actors before they began motion capturing him.
2. The doubled frame rate is assisting with motion capture smoothness.
3. Originally, motion capture was done with reflective dots, but is now instead done with infrared LEDs.
Two opinions:
1. I don't think I'd like 48fps. I hate the fakeness that the motion smoothness setting on newer TVs bring, and this is similar.
2. I hope The Hobbit is better than some of the reviews say it is.
One question:
1. Why is Serkis not taken seriously as an actor? Watch him act in behind the scenes footage on the internet, he's amazing. Seriously.

What I learned this week: Not much. Just worked on my kinetic type thing.
What I want to learn in the future: How to sleep on command.
Something that frustrated me: I've had like three papers due this week. I'm so sick of writing.
Something that made me happy: Done. With. Tutorials.
I am beyond excited for this movie. Seriously.

Marvel's Phase 2
Three things I did not know:
1. That television shows will start to become like movie franchises. (I did know about the Whedon-produced SHIELD show, however).
2. Competing studios are actually starting to talk to each other (cough, Fantastic Four, cough).
3. This may help create longer-form story telling (which definitely made me think of Lord of the Rings, which is essentially one movie).
Two opinions:
1. Iron Man 3 looks cool, but MAN am I excited for both Ant-Man (directed by one Mr. Edgar Wright, who is easily in my top three filmmakers) and Guardians of the Galaxy (directed by James Gunn, who made Super, which, while not one of my favorite films ever, definitely did some crazy things [that scene with the wrench and "cutting"? Man... I'll never forget that]).
2. I'm not sure whether to be excited about Man of Steel or not. Zach Snyder is visually a good director, and since he's not writing the script the film may actually be good.
One question:
1. Avengers 2, where are you...2015? Aw, man...

Rise of the Guardians
Three things I did not know:
1. That Rise of the Guardians was not going in a "post-modern" world with Santa on a cell phone or the Easter bunny on Twitter.
2. The director wanted to make the film feel more live-action than animated, so he used such techniques as making the camera feel as though it was on a crane.
3. Ramsey put a lot of work into the background of each scene.
Two opinions:
1. There's something about the animation style of Rise of the Guardians... I can't tell if I like it or not. It's definitely different.
2. Minority Report - now there's a good movie. It's cool that he worked on the storyboards for that.
One question:
1. Why did this film gross so low? It's the only film this year with Santa in it.

What I want to learn in the future: Um....nothing really right now. Better time management? Heh, heh...
Something that frustrated me: I'm sick again. Le sigh.
Something that made me happy: The play I was helping with at the school is over. So...yay.
Neil Patrick Harris. Dreaming. Puppets.
Good times, eh?

Spongebob
Three things I did not know:
1. That Spongebob was still on the air.
2. That they made a stop-motion Christmas special as an homage to the old Rankin-Bass specials. (#CommunityDidItFirst)
3. Over 30 people worked on the special.
Two opinions:
1. Even as a kid, I never really liked Spongebob
2. The stop-motion looks really cool, however. It looks like they put some genuine work into it.
One question:
Why did it air on CBS before Nickelodeon? That seems weird.
TWILIGHT
Three things I did not know:
1. That guys think they can be better than Edward <3
2. Guys feel sad when you talk about how great Edward is to them (how stupid).
3. That guys don't want their relationships to be more like Edward and Bellas.
Two opinions:
1. SO LIKE. YEA. GUYS DON'T LIKE EDWARD BECAUSE THEY AREN'T AS GOOD AS HIM. SO DUMB. EDWARD IS SO STRONG BUT SO WOUNDED LIKE A PUPPY, BUT LIKE, A TOUGH PUPPY. YOU KNOW THE KIND. BUT GUYS ARE JUST STUPID AND THEY DON'T GET WHY EDWARD IS SO GREAT AND KIND AND LOVING. HE WATCHES OVER BELLA BECAUSE HE LOVES BELLA EVEN THOUGH HE DESERVES WAY BETTER THAN DUMB BELLA I LOVE YOU EDWARD.
2. I wish I had an Edward........................................................</3 :'(
One question:
1. When can I see Twilight again!? I'm going to go watch the DVDs!

Meanwhile, in the real world...
Three things I did not know:
1. That this was actually becoming a problem.
2. That some women become so obsessed with these books that they look at their real husbands or boyfriends and think they aren't good enough.
3. That some guys are actually trying to be more like Edward.
Two opinions:
1. Lolwut? This whole thing is ridiculous.
2. I mean, seriously women. It's a fictional character. Calm yo'self.
One question:
1. Why? Just.......why?...

EnChroma
Three Things I Didn't Know:
1. You can fix color blindness with glasses.
2. These glasses will also generally enhance color.
3. You can use lenses to change shades of color.
Two Opinions:
1. Those glasses are really expensive.
2. These are honestly cool. Imagine seeing vivid red or blue for the first time in years. That'd be awesome.
One Question:
1. Why is there a price difference depending on whether you're color blind or not?

The Bay
Three Things I Did Not Know:
1. That this film existed.
2. That it had already been released and I hadn't heard about it.
3. That 40 percent of the Chesapeake Bay is a dead zone.
Two Opinions:
1. Found footage is almost never effective and quite frequently gets in the way of storytelling (see: Chronicle, a film that would've been 100x better had it not been bogged down by explanations of why there was a camera there at the time).
2. That shot in the trailer of the bug-thing crawling out of the fish creeped me out.
One question:
1. When is found footage going to stop being used?

What I want to learn in the future: After effects
Something that frustrated me: Thursday was one of the most stressful days I've had in probably the last year.
Something that made me happy: Sleep, oh my god. Sleep is so nice.
Here's a Funny or Die video of celebrities doing pro-bowling trick shots. Everyone from Adam Scott and Aubrey Plaza (from the fantastic Parks and Rec) to John Goodman to the guy who played Al Borland on Home Improvement is in this.

Voice Actors
Three things I did not know:
1. Frank Welker voiced Abu in Aladdin.
2. Seth MacFarlane is hosting the next Oscars.
3. That voice acting has begun attracting A-listers.
Two opinions:
1. It's awesome that voice actors like Frank Weller are getting more and more fame.
2. I don't think Family Guy is that great anymore, and MacFarlane is kind've one note.
One question:
1. Why did Chris Rock make a joke about how easy voice acting is? Seems unprofessional.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Quest for More Money
Three things I did not know:
1. Rango was created by ILM and was their first completely original film.
2. Disney will probably dismantle ILM.
3. Disney currently owns the Monkey Island IP. I never thought of that.
Two opinions:
1. The fact that Disney is calling Star Wars a "family friendly" entertainment brand makes me nervous. I want more Empire, less Phantom.
2. Losing ILM would be a shame. They're a great special effects company.
One question:
1. Is the sequel going to be good, or is it going to be.......the prequels again?

What I learned this week: How to capture footage from cameras into Premiere.
What I want to learn in the future: At this point, I just want to film the rest of my documentary.
Something that frustrated me: TRAFFIC. Was stuck in Canada for an hour an a half Sunday in slow moving traffic. CAN YOU THINK OF A WORSE SITUATION?
Something that made me happy: Uhhhh...Minecraft, I guess. This week was pretty uneventful. I visited Fredonia last weekend and that was cool.
One of my favorite series on YouTube is RoosterTeeth's Let's Play Minecraft. Here's Episode 23 (the most recent episode), where the guys do a riff on The Hunger Games.
DISCLAIMER: I do have to warn you, they swear. There's nothing I can really do about it, I think most of us swear when playing games. Hopefully I don't get in trouble for posting this. I try not to post things that have poor language but I think we can handle it.
I also couldn't find another clip of interest this week, honestly.

Apple - The Death of the Disc Drive
Three things I did not know:
I'm going to be honest, I knew most of the things on this article. So this is going to be a stretch.
1. That the 2001 iMac's slogan was "Rip. Mix. Burn."
2. That plenty of music releases are worth buying a piece of plastic instead of a file.
3. That more labels are selling their music directly to consumers, via their own websites.
(See, a stretch.)
Two opinions:
1. Good riddance, disc drive. I barely use you, and you had unnecessary heft. Can't wait to get my new MacBook Pro next year so I can get rid of about a pound of weight.
2. In fact, good riddance MP3 downloads. I prefer music streaming through Rdio (a Spotify competitor). I pay $10 a month and I get 95 percent of the music I listen to anytime I want it.
One question:
1. How long will it take for other computer manufacturers to follow? They've started with their laptops already, but dropping it from AIOs is new.

Fake Sandy Photos
Three things I did not know:
1. That you could search by image on google. That's pretty cool.
2. That there's a site that can analyze photos to find whether or not they're photoshopped. Again, pretty cool.
3. That people were falling for those photos. They look kinda fake.
Two opinions:
1. That first picture with the Statue of Liberty is ridiculous. The water is completely calm and there's a boat right there. It's pretty funny.
2. Lol that shark. I think that's all that needs to be said.
One question:
1. Why do people believe everything they see on Twitter of Facebook? People are so dumb.

What I learned this week: How to use the cameras, woo!
What I want to learn in the future: Actually, I just want to start shooting.
Something that frustrated me: I was driving home one night this week, and on the bridge above a road near my house was a passing train. I've never seen a train pass there. EVER. And the week after I need a train sound, one does.... sigh....
Something that made me happy: I saw Argo, and it was fantastic. Best movie I've seen this year. Also, I was inducted into NTHS.

Princess Sofia, the White Latina
Three things I did not know:
1. That Sofia existed. Who knew?
2. People are upset over her skin color because she's supposed to be Hispanic but appears to be and is voiced by a white girl.
3. Disney argues that since she lives in a fairytale world, it doesn't matter.
Two opinions:
1. Who cares about her skin color? Really.
2. Disney has other ethnic princesses, I don't think they're actually trying to be racist.
One question:
1. Why does this matter, exactly? They're making a big deal out of nothing. Meh.

What It Really Means to be a Director
Three things I did not know:
1. That basically all you do is talk as a director.
2. How a film turns out is based on everyone who works on the film.
3. That you really need to communicate your vision with everyone, from set designers to editors.
Two opinons:
1. Directing kinda sounds boring. I'd want a much more hands on job.
2. At the same time, your name is really front and center if you direct.
One question:
1. Why exactly does an actor have the most dangerous job on set?

What I want to learn in the future: How to use equipmeeeeennnt
Something that frustrated me: $#@#$ TRAIN SOUNDS ERRGH GARBAGE blah.
Something that made me happy: My sound story went over pretty well. Also yesterday (Saturday) was possibly the best day I've had since the summer ended.
So Community was supposed to premiere this week.
It didn't, NBC pulled it from the schedule.
No, it's cool. I don't even care anymore.
Sigh.
I assume NBC has these guys locked up in a dungeon somewhere, begging for food while Chevy Chase slowly loses his mind and says the N-word, but here's the cast telling you that October 19th is actually a state of mind rather than a date.
I hate you NBC. I hate you so much.
*cries*
Here's the stupid video.

California Makes It Illegal for Employers to Ask for Social Media Log-in Information
Three Things I Did Not Know:
1. Well, honestly, I did know this was happening. I heard about it probably on the podcast Tech News Today about a year ago. However, I didn't know that California was pushing legislation to stop it.
2. I also wasn't aware colleges were doing this for people who were applying for school.
3. That a teacher's aide was fired in Michigan for not giving up her Facebook password.
Two opinons:
1. This whole issue is ridiculous. No one should ever have to give their log-in credentials to anything unless prompted to do so by the authorities. The fact that people are being turned down jobs or fired because of this is outrageous.
2. You should always keep your social sites locked down to just your friends, and be careful who you add and don't add. You never know how it could affect your life.
One question:
1. Just...why are we letting this happen? If everyone said no to this, companies would eventually stop asking.

Water Wigs
Three things I did not know:
1. That this was possible. No, seriously. I didn't know you could get a picture of a water ballon on someone's head like this.
2. That he had to make his studio completely dark and use a super fast flash to get it to work.
3. That you could use a microphone to trigger a flash going off.
Two opinions:
1. My first thought was "LOLWUT?" but this is honestly a really cool way to make art. And that mohawk shot? Awesome.
2. The pictures look so saturated, they almost look fake.
One question:
1. Are the pictures saturated like that because of something like photoshop or because of the way the flash works? I know he used colored backgrounds but seriously.

One question:
1. Are the pictures saturated like that because of something like photoshop or because of the way the flash works? I know he used colored backgrounds but seriously.

What I learned this week: I need better time management.
What I want to learn in the future: Starting film this week!
Something that frustrated me: After trying to ignore Minecraft for over a year now so I wouldn't get addicted, I gave in. Minecraft is wonderful. And sucking up all my time. :(
Something that made me happy: I'm on antibiotics now! So my condition has vastly improved!
Since I was just talking about Joss Whedon, here's Joss trying to convince his fans to go see The Avengers again so that Mike Birbiglia's independent film Sleepwalk With Me (which I heard was great) wouldn't take over any of his screens. It's a few months old, but funny nonetheless.

Joss Whedon
Three Things I Did Not Know:
1. That Whedon had his Much Ado About Nothing project in the works for years.
2. That Whedon did Buffy mostly because he couldn't get a directorial gig.
3. He worked as a writer on Roseanne, apparently.
Two Opinions:
1. In direct contrast to my rant on Tim Burton, I think Joss Whedon is great. Firefly was an amazing show (and Serenity a great follow up movie, even if we did lose...well...spoilers. Ms. Licata, you know what I'm talking about. Leaf on the wind and all that), Buffy is on my "I need to watch this" list (I will get around to it, I swear! Eventually I will!), I constantly have Doctor Horrible songs stuck in my head, not to mention he's a great writer, and is probably owed 75 percent of the credit for The Avengers working so damn well and not turning into Transformers but with Superheroes: The Movie. Also, who else could follow up the third largest grossing movie of ALL TIME with an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing that he announced as quietly as possible and shot with handheld cameras in black and white. He's awesome.
2. That said, I could never get into Dollhouse, though I heard the second season was better.
One Question:
1. What's the plot for Avengers 2, and how can I skip ahead in time to May 1st, 2015 and watch it?

Dawn of the Dead Pets
Three Things I Did Not Know:
1. That Frankenweenie was a 1984 live action short.
2. That Frankenweenie has sentimental value, because it reminds him of him and his pet.
3. That all the characters models were in black and white. I always thought it was shot in color and just filtered to be in black and white.
Two Opinions:
1. Tim Burton is one of my least favorite filmmakers. Yep, I said it. Other than maybe the original Batman movie, which is only salvageable by Jack Nicholson's Joker, I can't think of a single movie of his I like. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and especially Alice and Wonderland are both awful, though part of that may come from myself not liking Johnny Depp as an actor (also, how do you replace Gene Wilder? By making him have daddy issues? Seriously? Sigh). I don't really like his stop motion flicks either, only sitting through about twenty minutes of Corpse Bride and despising The Nightmare Before Christmas. Am I on the unpopular opinion here? Probably. But that's my opinion on Burton.
2. All that said, I find it respectable that Frankenweenie uses it's own distinct look, and I think it's a good look for that movie.
One Question:
1. How much did Frankenweenie make at the box office opening weekend?
(actually I know the answer to this one. It opened at #5 (ouch) with $11m (double ouch))

What I learned this week: I need to get more sleep.
What I want to learn in the future: Still film.
Something that frustrated me: I missed a day of BOCES this week and two days of school. Well, three if you count how I skipped Spirit Day on Friday since we weren't going to do anything. Being sick sucks.
Something that made me happy: This Photoshop was made on Saturday. I posted it to Reddit. It got over 50,000 views. This made me happy.
Here's every drink ever on Mad Men.
They drink a lot.

ParaNorman
Three Things I Did Not Know:
1. That audiences still find surprise in stop motion due to the abundance of CGI animated films.
2. John Goodman is in ParaNorman. Did not know that.
3. ParaNorman used Replacement Face animation and 3D printers, which is really cool.
Two Opinions:
1. The animation in ParaNorman looks really cool.
2. The use of 3D printers for stop motion is something I had never thought about.
One Question:
1. When does ParaNorman come out on home media? I kinda want to see it.

Star Trek
Three Things I Did Not Know:
1. That TNG was getting 15 to 20 million viewers per week in 1994.
2. That TNG is essentially responsible for turning series into commodities (such as Law and Order and CSI).
3. TNG set the path for genre shows like Lost, Buffy, and The X-Files.
Two Opinions:
1. Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) is one of my favorite people in the world. I read his blog regularly and would love to meet him. He just seems like a guy who likes to love things. His couple appearances on the Nerdist podcast are also two of my favorite episodes.
2. Picard > Kirk
One Question:
1. Will Star Trek ever return to television, or is it better left to the cinema?

Six Filmmaking Tips from Christopher Nolan
Three things I didn't know:
1. Christopher Nolan understands every job on the set, which is pretty cool.
2. When at a festival, you shouldn't feel bad about walking up to talent and telling them they did a good job. It may come in handy.
3. That to make films, you must love film.
Two opinions:
1. Christopher Nolan is awesome.
2. Inception wasn't confusing as long as you were paying attention.
One question:
When can I go to a festival? Because I'd love to go to one.

Finding Nemo 3D and Why 3D Filmmaking is not the Future
Three things I didn't know:
1. 3D releases are down this year from previous years.
2. 3D sales have dropped in recent years.
3. That Lion King 3D made massive money at the box office last fall.
Two opinions:
1. 3D sucks and is not worth it.
2. James Cameron hasn't made a good film since Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
(I don't know if these are opinions, or facts.)
One question:
What do people see in Avatar? The story was essentially Pocahontas in Space. I guess the effects were good. Whatever.

What I learned this week: PHOTOSHOP. So. Happy. Even if I'm slow with the program, it's totally worth it so I can put my friend Ken's face onto Jesus (which I did).

Expressive Robot
Three things I did not know:
1. That by watching non-verbal cues, you can learn to trust someone or not.
2. That you can program a robot to move like a human.
3. That we're becoming closer to having Hollywood-esque robot technology.
Two opinions:
1. I wonder how often I give off those non-verbal cues.
2. That robots movements (in the video) look super lifelike, with it's hands.

3D Printers Article Response
Three things I did not know:
1. 3D Printers have been around for 25 years. I thought they were fairly new.
2. That some printers are selling for as little as $350.
3. That 80,000 printers have been sold since 2007.
Two opinions:
1. As 3D printers become cheaper, I think a lot of people, especially hobbyists, will pick one up. (Hobbyists could use one for making things such as pieces for tabletop RPGs. I think that would be pretty cool.)
2. That I really, really want one (this is a cop out, but it's been running through my mind since I found out about 3D printers a couple years ago).
One question:
1. As 3D printers become more and more affordable over the next 20 years, will that affect the toy industry in any way?

Class Evaluation (final post of 2011-12 school year)
Well, folks. This is it... for now. But worry not, most of us will be back next year. Until then, here's my class evaluation:
1. In general, what did you like most about this class?
Hmm. I guess the obvious answer is the animating. sometimes it can be stressful, annoying, angering, etc., but it can also be pretty relaxing and fun. I'll probably continue to animate in my free time after this year ends.
2. What was your favorite project and why?
The final project. I'm really proud of how that one turned out, and going back to my earlier animation, it just shows how much I progressed through the year. Even 3D animation helped me on my final project, as I got used to using different camera techniques.
3. In general, what did you like least about this class?
This class takes up a lot of time, but it's nothing I can't handle. It does put a shortage on my studying for other tests, but I got through those alright. Honestly, there wasn't a lot I didn't like.
Oh, and storyboards, but there's not a whole lot anyone can do about that.
4. What was your least favorite project and why?
If I never rotoscope again in my life, I'll die a happy man. It just eats up time.
5. What are your future plans upon graduation?
College, for film. Somewhere. I wish I knew where, but I don't.
6. Do you feel that this class will help you achieve your future academic or career goals? Please give specific examples.
I'm really planning on focusing in on film, so I'll probably have a much better answer to this next year. I think this class has improved my art skills greatly and taught me that for every problem, there's a solution. Always.
7. What advice would you give to incoming students?
Storyboards are an absolute pain. Do them anyway.
8. Additional comments:
None.
Have a great summer everyone.

Parks and Rec: The Best of Perd
Along with Community, Louie, and Archer, Parks and Rec is the best comedy on television right now. It's like classic Office, but about 10 times as good.
One of my favorite characters on the show is Perd Hapley, a local reporter who never really knows what he's talking about, but in a very innocent way. Here's his best moments:
(should mention, the video contains spoilers from last night's season finale. If you watch the show or ever plan to and haven't seen last night's episode, stop before the last 20 seconds or so)

- Something that made you happy: I've been in a semi-good mood lately. So that's nice. Also, musical started for me. A month from Thursday (as in, March 9th) is the premiere. I'm excited.
